5 Essential Tips to Boost Your Self-Esteem in Your Encore Years

In another post, I wrote about reasons you may not include enough self-care in your life (Struggling with Self-Care) and one of those reasons was low self-esteem. However, self-care is not the only thing adversely affected by low self-esteem; this topic is big enough and important enough to warrant a post. For clarification, self-esteem is how you think and feel about yourself. Women with high self-esteem can discount negative opinions and remain assured of their self-worth. While seeking approval from others is natural, if you’re overly concerned about what others think or say about you, it may be a sign of low self-esteem. As you navigate your encore years, focusing on building your self-confidence becomes even more crucial.

Here are five tips to help you improve your self-esteem:

  1. Stop Guessing What Others Think.
You cause yourself unnecessary suffering by imagining others intend you harm or think poorly of you. The truth is, you have no idea what anyone else is thinking. Most of the time, people are preoccupied with their own lives and thoughts. Training yourself to avoid making assumptions about others’ thoughts or intentions can free up your energy to focus on what truly matters: your well-being and happiness.

Instead of guessing what others might be thinking, focus on what you know for sure. Remember that everyone is entitled to their opinions, but those opinions don’t define you. Your worth depends not on external validation but on your self-acceptance and confidence.

  2. Live Your Own Life.
There’s no right way to live your life. No one is appointed to judge the worthiness of your existence. You have no responsibility to please anyone but yourself. Be of service to humanity, but never become someone’s doormat. Embrace your life fully with vision, purpose, and commitment. Establish your life purpose and live boldly according to it.

Your encore years are an excellent opportunity to rediscover passions, explore new interests, and set personal goals that resonate with your true self. Now is the time to live authentically and without apologies. Living your life fully means making choices that honor your dreams and aspirations.

  1. Make Your Own Choices.
Your life plan is the only one that truly matters. While family, friends, or societal expectations may suggest different paths, remember they’re spectators in your life. You’re the one living it daily. Make choices that align with your values and aspirations, and stay true to yourself.

Making your own choices means taking responsibility for your happiness and well-being. It’s about listening to your inner voice and trusting your instincts. The decisions you make should reflect your desires, not the expectations imposed by others. You empower yourself to create a fulfilling and joyful future by taking control of your life.

  1. Value Your Own Opinions.
Why should anyone else’s opinions matter more than your own? Make your life choices sincerely and deliberately. Stand by your decisions and values without second-guessing them simply because others may not approve. Your opinions and wishes are important and should guide your life.

Valuing your own opinions involves recognizing your wisdom and experiences. You’ve accumulated a lifetime of valuable knowledge and insights. Trusting yourself and your judgment can bolster your self-esteem and help you confidently navigate your encore years. Remember, your voice is significant, and your perspective matters.

  1. Surround Yourself with Positive People.
While you can’t altogether avoid negative people, you can choose to limit your exposure to them. Cultivate relationships with friends and acquaintances who have a positive outlook on life, share your essential values, and value you as a person. Positive people will support you and uplift your self-esteem.

Creating a supportive network is crucial for maintaining healthy self-esteem. Positive relationships can provide encouragement, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. Surround yourself with people who celebrate your achievements, understand your challenges, and encourage you to pursue your passions. These connections can significantly affect how you perceive yourself and your place in the world.

Your encore years are a time to live joyfully and with peace of heart. Embrace these tips to boost your self-esteem and confidently navigate this new chapter in your life. By focusing on self-acceptance, living authentically, making empowered choices, valuing your opinions, and surrounding yourself with positivity, you can enhance your self-esteem and create a fulfilling and joyful future.
