Why Do You Struggle With Self-Care?

We all know self-care is essential to our well-being and success in life. It’s funny how knowing this doesn’t make it any easier to carve out the time needed to practice it.

Let’s explore some reasons you might struggle with self-care to help you become more aware as you work more of it into your routine.

 

You Feel Shame:

Many women don’t find the time for self-care because they don’t believe they deserve it. This stems from a poor self-image, where you might think you’re not worth the time for proper self-care. Improving your self-image and reminding yourself you deserve self-care can make scheduling time in your busy life easier.

 

You Don’t Want to Make the Effort:

Setting aside time to take care of yourself takes effort; sometimes, it’s just easier to skip it. This reluctance often ties back to a poor self-image or time management. Addressing these aspects can help if you don’t want to make the effort. Sometimes, it’s helpful to put self-care into your schedule, treating it like any other important appointment.

I tell clients this all the time, “Act like you’re the most important person in your life (you are) and make and keep the appointment for self-care, whatever that looks like!”

While you might treat self-care as a luxury, it’s essential to your well-being. Don’t ignore it or put it off.

 

You Don’t Know What Self-Care Is:

The phrase “treat yourself” is common today, but it’s important to know the distinction between treating yourself and self-care.

Treating yourself is a reward after a specific activity, not a regular staple. For example, “treating yourself” is having an ice cream cone on a Friday night. Self-care, on the other hand, is making sure you eat a healthy diet every day.

 

You’re Tired:

The number one reason women struggle with self-care is being tired. This is a self-perpetuating problem because you will feel increasingly tired without proper self-care. If this resonates with you, it’s crucial to get over that first hump and prioritize rest. There are a myriad of reasons women have trouble sleeping. If you need help pinpointing your challenges, talk to a professional who can help. Once you get some rest, you’ll feel more energized for future self-care.

Regardless, it’s essential to identify why you’re struggling with self-care so you can address the issue. Without self-care, you’ll likely feel tired and stressed, impacting your health and quality of life.

Remember, you deserve to live your encore years with joy and peace of heart. Taking care of yourself is the first step towards that.
