9 Tips for Boomer Women Traveling Solo

This week, I’m going down a different path as I see and hear about more and more women in their encore years choosing to travel solo. They do it for a variety of reasons. That’s not the important piece here. What is important is that there are ways to make solo travel some of your life’s most enriching and empowering experiences. Whether you’re exploring a bustling city, trekking through serene landscapes, or immersing yourself in a new culture, solo travel offers unique opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery.

You can tailor your adventure to your preferences and pace, step out of your comfort zone, build confidence, and create unforgettable memories. Solo travel broadens your horizons, fosters resilience, and deepens your understanding of yourself and the world. Here are some tips to help you think through and plan your first (or next) solo trip:

  1. Plan but Stay Flexible.

Research your destination thoroughly and create a detailed itinerary to guide your trip. Include must-see attractions, dining options, and cultural experiences. However, leave some space for spontaneity, as unplanned moments often lead to the most memorable experiences. Flexibility allows you to explore hidden gems and adapt to unexpected changes. Your trip may be nothing like you imagined, but it’s an adventure. There’s always next time.

  1. Stay in Safe Accommodations.

Prioritize safety when choosing where to stay. Choose accommodations with strong security measures, positive reviews, and central locations. Consider staying in hostels or guesthouses known for their vibrant solo traveler communities, where you can meet like-minded people and share travel tips. A safe and comfortable base enhances your overall experience.

  1. Learn Basic Local Phrases.

Invest time in learning basic phrases in the local language before you go. Start with greetings, polite expressions, and essential questions. This effort helps you navigate daily interactions more smoothly and shows respect for the local culture. Engaging with locals in their language can lead to richer and more authentic travel experiences. Most often, locals will embrace your efforts and help your learning process.

  1. Pack Light and Smart.

Focus on packing versatile clothing and essential items. Choose lightweight, multipurpose outfits so you can layer for different weather conditions. Include travel-sized toiletries, a first-aid kit, and any medications you need. A well-organized, lightweight bag makes it easier to move around, reduces stress, and enhances your overall travel experience.

  1. Stay Connected.

Keep your loved ones updated about your travels. Share your itinerary, check in regularly, and use technology to stay connected. If you’re going hiking, ensure your GPS is turned on. Staying connected provides peace of mind and ensures that someone is always aware of your whereabouts in an emergency.

  1. Trust Your Instincts.

Always listen to your instincts and prioritize your safety. Don’t hesitate to leave or seek help if a situation or location feels off. Research common scams and safety tips for your destination. Your intuition is a powerful tool in navigating unfamiliar environments and ensuring your well-being. (I have never been led astray when I listened to my intuition. Pay attention to yours.)

  1. Join Group Activities.

Participate in group tours, classes, or social events to meet new people and enhance your travel experience. These activities provide a safe way to explore, offer opportunities for social interaction, and can lead to lasting friendships. Look for local meetups, walking tours, or cultural workshops that interest you.

  1. Keep Important Documents Safe.

Make multiple copies of your passport, insurance, and other important documents. Store these copies separately, such as in your luggage and a secure online storage service. Having digital and physical backups ensures you’re prepared for any situation, reducing stress and potential travel disruptions.

  1. Embrace the Experience.

Solo travel is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Embrace the freedom to explore at your own pace, make decisions independently, and challenge yourself. Reflect on your experiences, write a travel journal, and capture memories through photos. This journey is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the world, fostering resilience and a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures.

As you embark on this solo adventure, remember that it’s not just about the destinations you visit but also the journey of discovering yourself. Each step you take, each person you meet, and each new experience you embrace adds to the tapestry of your life. Enjoy the freedom, savor the moments, and cherish the memories you’ll create.
